Dec 18

Hi Guys! Sorry I wasn't around for too long yesterday, I had to plan an event at our property in Grapevine! But don't worry, I've got TONS of stuff for you to do tonight and tomorrow! It's going to be a very exciting weekend in our wonderful city! I sincerely hope everyone stays safe and warm all weekend! But with Temps being well above what they have been over the last couple of weeks, that shouldn't be too hard!

Okay, a couple of things, first the ramp from the Dallas North Tollway on to eastboundGeorge Bush is expected to Re Open tonight after an overnight takner accident that killed one person. NTTA Crews cleaning the last ot the debris said all that was left to fix was the concrete that was damaged in the fire.

Secondly, holiday spending is expected to increase in the state of Texas due to an additioin of 17, 300 Jobs bringing the jobless rate down from 8.3% to just 8%, said the Texas Workforce Commission Friday. This report amounts to come of the strongest evidence yet the state economy has begun a recovery after plunging into a recession about a year ago!

Guys, this month is all about 2 things, shopping and eating. Before I get to the shopping, I must talk to you about the nommage going on across the city. Of course, if you've been following the blog you are aware of the fact that some of Dallas's best restaurants have been hosting nights full of specials, giveaways, parties, and free dinners! Well, lately, the local publications have been adding more and more fuel to this little fire by ranking restaurants, chefs, and dishes; bringing about more reviews than average, and promoting a slew of new places in and around Dallas. For example, the Dallas Observer and D magazine have sent people out this week to cover Stephen Pyles newest eatery, Salum, this week, Dallas News (aka the Dallas Morning News) head food critic Leslie Brenner has reviewed and displayed her favorite $20 or less treats across the city, and the lovely pegasus news, as always, has been collaborating with Urban Spoon to review some of the most popular eateries. Read up, eat outside the house, and enjoy!

Okay, so in terms of shopping, guys, one of our Very Own Residents (and provider of Wednesday night's wine) has recently opened up a brand new euphoria for your vino! Alcove (which was once State Street Spirits) owners have completely revamped the once homey little wine store to a chic and totally awesome place for one to "hang and drink" with owners/patrons. With 25 labels to start (ranging in price low $30s to about the $50-$60 range), a sleek silver and black bar with sharp red and black furnishings, this is a place you can definately call "Wine home". Best to come out soon! Oh, and don't forget, next month, they're going ot start having a movie and TV night! GRAND OPENING IS TOMORROW NIGHT!

And, we've got more than ONE wine event going on tomorrow night. Popular Eatery Eatzi's will be hosting their very own Second Annual Wine and Food Event, 1PM-5 PM tomorrow! Come out to the Oak Lawn fave (and my Friday Lunch Spot) to sample over 30 wines and some of their "Best Values Ever!). An added bonus, purchase any four bottles or more and recieve and additional 10% off yoru wine purchase.
DON'T FORGET GUYS! FOR ALL OF YOUR POST HOLIDAY NEEDS, COME BY MY OFFICE! I can help you out with Maids, dry cleaning, shoe shining, car detailing, anything you need! Come by and we'll have a chat!

Come "experience the redemptive power of the darkness and the regenerative nature of the light," according to the press release, at this 17th annual event. This is a multi-cultural, non-sectarian event "explores Joy & Wonder" through various mediums–song, dance, ritual, storytelling, drumming, puppetry, and even professional yo-yoing. This we've got to see. Come early and stay late for the Yule Fest, featuring characters, music, and photos with Father Winter.

LMAFO WITH SHWAYZE? ARE YOU TEXTING ME ABOUT A DEAD GUY?
7 pm, House of Blues, 2200 N. Lamar
Don’t let the Redfoo and Sky Blu monikers fool you. The two guys who make up electronic hip-hop duo LMFAO are Stefan Gordy, son of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, and Stefan’s nephew, Skylar Gordy. Talk about obscuring a lofty pedigree. Check them out tonight at the House of Blues!
The Von Ehrics, Pusher
9 PM, Lakewood Bar and Grill, 6340 Gaston
Robert Jason Vandygriff loves Dallas...so much that the guitarist/vocalist of local country/punk trio (think Son Volt) the Von Ehrics named this band not so much to pay homage to the legendary wrestling family, but rather to pay kudos the city itself. Come out to Dallas's most famous and noted dive bar and check their reasoning for all this, lol.
Dem Southernfolks are dang'd Good Records!
9 PM, Good Records, 1808 Lower Greenville
Dem Southernfolkz drops by Good Records to talk about their writing process, but also to hype up the then-upcoming release of their free-to-download, four-song EP, Something To Hold On To. Pearl River with Mike Zito

"Pearl River" is Mike's second release on Electo Groove, and he is joined this time out by a handful of special guests including Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, Reese Wynans (Double Trouble), Susan Cowsill, Lynwood Slim and Jumpin' Johnny Sansone. The result is a rollicking slice of Americana served up with heaping slabs of greasy New Orleans funk, gritty blues and good old fashioned rock 'n' roll

Dec 11

Hey guys! Wow! I'm early on this one! But hey, at least now we can actually hear about dinner stuff, eh?!
So it's still chilly! Today's high is supposed to reach around 45 degrees, but with the windchill, you can only imagine how many layers you'll have to wear. With a low tonight of 38 degrees and a chance of late night showers, it's best that you use caution on your outings tonight!

This year marks the 40th White Rock Marathon, and the 1 year anniversary of the death of runner Erin Lahr, an Austin marathoner who succumbed to a cardiac arrhythmia at the 23rd mile mark last year. Dec 10

Hi Guys! Soo every day just gets colder and colder! But you know, it’s all in the name of the Season. We’ve got a warm front heading towards us from New Mexico, and due to the high pressure system sitting right on top of us, we’re due to feel it come around Sunday, causing temperatures to reach 67 degrees, just in time for the White Rock Lake Marathon.

If you’ve been watching any local news, you’d know this was RACE WEEK for avid runners big and small. The Dallas White Rock Lake Marathon, a USAT certified 26.2 mile course, will be taking place this Sunday. Complete with a half marathon and relay races, runners will be taking the street from Uptown, to Downtown, around Lakewood and Deep Ellum. If you plan on going anywhere this Sunday, I’d highly suggest walking, as many streets will be blocked off to make way for the runners. Registration for the 1/2 marathon and the relay races has been capped, with slots only available in the full marathon course. Remember, this is a registration cap of 20,000, so you can only imagine. PS: Yours truly competed in the race last year, and managed to crawl across the finish line in 4:58:07. OUCH.

Secondly, four North Texas Schools have been ranked among the Best in the Nation. DISD’s School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center ranks No. 5 and the School of Science and Engineering Magnet comes in at No. 8. Highland Park is ranked at number 71 and Ft. Worth’s Academy of Fine Arts is No. 91. US News and World Report reviewed 21,000 high schools in 48 states and the District of Columbia using research based on how well public schools serve students and prepare them for college-level work.

Lastly, the GOP announced today a “Purity Test” to rule out true GOP representatives and moderates within the Party. The ten standards, which include things such as opposing gun control and defending “conventional marriage”, must be met by party members in order to retain their slots in the GOP before the 2010 midterm election. For more information, please visit http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2009/11/23/2134917.aspx

Dec 9

Hey Guys! So today was ABSOLUTELY FREEZING! I hope everyone has stayed Cozy as the winter weather meanders its way in for the next few months. Although Weather.com has reported a high of 51 Degrees today, we're actually hovering just above freezing with a "high" of 33 degrees. Thankfully, clouds did not roll in until this afternoon. Prepare for tomorrow, with temps still maintaining their robust cold at around 45 degrees and partially cloudy skies. Remember to keep those plants covered! If you don't, swing by Gardens in the West Village for your patio plant needs!!!

Also, guys, although winter travel has a tendency to spike, and with economic recovery on the horizon, Southwest Airlines Chair Gary Kelly has yet to see potential for growth in the industry. Delta, United, and Ft. Worth based American Airlines all said that the worst appears to be behind the industry in terms of revenue and that premium traffic is percolating. Upside is Southwest will be starting it's "Rapid Rewards" Program again sometime in 2010.

Now, secondly, as if Pro Athletes have more to "Tiger" up to, Dallas Maverick (Reserve Forward) Tim Thomas is a suspect in an assault case which occured at a Denny's earlier today. The fracas occurred about 3 a.m. at the Denny’s in the 4400 block of North Central Expressway, adjacent to the La Quinta Inn near Fitzhugh Avenue. Allegedly throwing a chair and uttering gay slurs, Thomas was not arrested after the incident. Radio DJ Roger Emrich who happened to be eating in the establishment at the time stated no such thing occured.

Now, guys, in terms of this week, there is SO much going on.

As I said yesterday, Ladies, Mei Mei's fashionette in the West Village will be having 50% off EVERYTHING! Yes, that's right, I said EVERYTHING! Dresses, shirts, jewelry, skirts, shoes, you name it! Swing in! You know you need stuff for that Christmas party!!!

Dec 8

Hey guys! Sooo apparantly, Tiger Woods hit a tree and a whole lotta women fell out of it! While new reports of illicit affairs make their way out of the woodworks, someone (complete with a blond ponytail) was taken out of the Woods home at 3 this morning (EST). While initial reports stated it was Elin Nordegren, also known as Mrs. Woods, it was later confirmed that it was his Mother-In-Law, Barbro Holmberg, a prominent Social Democratic politician, currently serves as the governor of Gävleborg County in eastern Sweden. She was released at 2 pm today.
While we enjoy clear skies and highs in the 50's today, much of the upper midwest is covered in snow. While this snowstorm is now east of us, a trucker called everything from Amarillo to Eastern Oklahoma "a sheet of ice." The storm didn't stop there, parts of Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin experienced wind gusts of up to 50 mph and snowdrifts between 8 and 15 feet high. Thankfully, we just experience things like "freezing fog", temps hovering close to freezing, and snow flurries that tease us into thinking that it's winter. Keep cozy, and the guys over at Gardens strongly advise you to "Keep your outdoor plants covered! If they freeze, come see us!"
In terms of things to do this week, guys, we've got a BUNCH! First off, SAVE SAVE SAVE on your Holiday Shopping! We've got Hanukkah starting this Friday at Sundown, so you've got a bit of time to shop for more Hanukkah gifts for your friends and family!

Plus, you've got Get Gifted Discount Days STILL going on at Mockingbird Station. 5-9 PM, you can get discounts at stores like Movida, Bittano, Index Skateboarding! All you have to do is mention 'get gifted' at the register! Plus, with great restaurants like Urban Taco and Rockfish, not to mention the Angelika Theatre, you can make a night of it!
TOMORROW Scardello is having Cheese 101 for $25. Reservations are required, and I know it seems kinda pricey for just going and sampleing some cheeses, but that's not all. Owner Rich Rogers will educate you on the differences between brie and tetilla, mozzerella and ricotta, swiss and white cheddar. With free beer and wine, you can't miss this! Come by my office for reservations.

Dec 5

Hey guys! So it's Saturday and we've got so much going on! Now that "How the Edge Stole Christmas" is no longer going on, a whole mess of events opened up for the night! But first things first, we've got a couple of big headlines in the news.
First off, there's the Big XII Championship TONIGHT in Arlington! We've got the Texas Longhorns Vs. the Nebraska Cornhuskers taking down the field in Jerryworld. While Texas has proved itself to the an amazing #2, the Cornhusker Defense could make the Longhorns' Credentials defensible. While a defeat tonight could jeopardize the Longhorns shot at a national title the thing of it is a game against Nebraska will give them a good sense of the SEC-type defense would be useful for next month. Here I am crossing my fingers at a Chance of a Big XII South Victory. Hook Em!
Secondly, tragedy has struck Dallas Real Estate Royalty. Henry S. Miller, JR has passed at the Youthful Age of 95. The man has taken a one man shop and turned it into a real estate empire so impressive, Roger Staubach worked under him during the off season. He is survived by his four children, sister, 15 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.
Lastly, the final two headlines have to do with the children.
Dallas public schools are concerned about how swine flu will effect schools finances. Because school bux are related to attendence, schools are going to be losing some money over the extra flu absences. Districts like Richardson and Mesquite are losing a significant amount of money over the absences ($800,00 and $2 Million respectively).
Thousands, YES THOUSANDS brave the cold for the Adolphus Children's parade. As the temps barely above 45 degrees, thousands of people marched through Dallas and donated like crazy to the kiddos!
TOMORROW! MAKE RESERVATIONS AT TRECE OR VILLA-O FOR MONDAY NIGHT! I AM NOT KIDDING! The sister restaurants on Travis St. are taking reservations for parties up to six and GIVING, yes GIVING, everyone a FREE two course dinner!
Tonights weather shows clear skies with temperatures getting down to about 36 degrees. Stay cozy tonight, please, and have some fun!!
