Southern Rock GOOOOOOODDDDD!
9 PM, Pearl on Commerce, 2038 Commerce St.
It must have been that Southern heat. It fueled bluesman and Georgia native Tinsley Ellis’ passion for the electric guitar and the fiery tradition of authentic blues music. He’s been doing it for more than 30 years, from his days as a member of Atlanta’s Alley Cats to his newest disc, the incendiary Speak No Evil. The album, his 12th release, offers a dozen self-penned tunes that highlight Ellis’ blazing fretwork and his full-throttle singing style. Ellis commands the platform and is prone to extended jams onstage. Throughout his career, he’s shared concert billing with legends such as the Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Koko Taylor and a slew of others.

Avalon at Ghostbar
10 PM, Ghostbar, 2440 Victory Ave.
Remember the boy next door that played records all day, and at night kept you up with songs of his own? He left home one day and was never heard from again. He moved to the big city, living in cheap motels, eating dollar hamburgers, working the boulevard with ex-models, thorazine freaks, transvestites, mothers, fathers, drunks, junkies and punk rockers alike. Welcome Mickey Avalon! Mickey Avalon has done whatever it took to get him to and off Hollywood Blvd. to invite you into his world. And I guess thats what it is, his world.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes
7 PM, The Loft, 1135 S. Lamar
When Alex Ebert left indie-electronica group Ima Robot, a switch somewhere inside of him flipped on an electric current. He grew a beard, met a lovely muse and convinced 10 people to join a musical commune he called Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The Los Angeles folk-rock group channels a Laurel Canyon vibe--Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas and the Papas, The Byrds--on its first full-length album, Up From Below. Most of the old-school pop influence was excised, edging the Magnetic Zeros closer to rock like Arcade Fire and Devendra Banhart's slower tempo folksiness. But the retro-feel is truly a lifestyle choice for Ebert and his Magnetic Zeros, who travel around the country in a white school bus like Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters, confirming their innate hippie-dom.
